Great post, some guns have actually incorporated thumb pad rests to encourage correct grip as well.

 

I am new to pistol shooting. I have owned my Glock 17 for a couple months. I have been looking at videos and info on grip, and have determined that because of my deformities (born with bent elbows), my left about 35 degrees, and my right 20 degrees, I need to develop my own techniques.

Hold your gun like this, and shoot groups like this, while moving. Grip it and Rip it. It's just the fundamentals of pistol: stance, grip, sight picture and trigger control. All competition shooters roll like this.

i'm right handed so i use my left thumb to press against the pistol frame l,i use the front of the trigger guard with my left forefinger to hold pistol tight,,i use my right tumb to apply slight downward pressure against the frame,, i grip the pistol pretty tight with my right hand,,i try to reduce recoil..it works pretty good for me

No offense intended, but that response seems to be a bit weak. No demonstrative improvement illustrated, no real identification of a problem other than a vague reference to thumbs? Please restate with more definition and illustration.

God gave you thumbs, use 'em! Don't follow the picture, WRONG! Your thumbs should grab the pistol, like they grab everything else you touch! The guy in the pic has NO control under recoil! NOVICE!

 

Allow me to suggest that you try a quick Google search on "thumbs forward grip handgun", which is what this thread explains.
You might find the results interesting.

I was taught to grip 20% with the strong hand, and 80% with the support hand. Is this similar to your teaching methods? A friend of mine was in the Special Forces, and he has help me improve my shot placement.

The exact percentages are difficult to gauge, so I've just been telling new shooters to apply more force with their support hand, so they don't tend to clench their shooting hand (and trigger finger). That seems to work, without being too precise about the percentages, seems easier to understand.

I shoot as described in post #2, but with my weak hand wrist 'locked' downward. Resulting in my weak hand thumb resting further forward...

 

My grip as well, found out that on my glock 29 that this also most comfortable and I can even keep "flatter" hold during rapid fire

Awesome posts everyone in new to shooting . I've shoot before but never owned a gun . I have a new glock 17 . Excellent tips on how to hold a firearm. I will start holding my firearm as instructed here. Thank you.

 

I'll have to try this the next time I shoot I'm lucky I can setup a target in my backyard I live in GA since I don't live in the city limits I can shoot on my property. I knew about using your finger tip from when I was in the Army but never shot a handgun just the M16 and my own rifles. I have a G23 and my rounds tend to aim low so hopefully it will help with that.
