The first thing I tell people is that many great men gave up their fortunes, freedom, land and lives to guarantee me the right to keep and bear arms. Next I tell them that I refuse to be a helpless victim. Then I try to get them to go to the range with me. A lot of converts are made at the firing line. If they refuse to listen and they turn down my offer to take them then I tell them we we will have to agree to disagree.

I do have family members who are staunchly anti-gun. They actually offered to take me to a gun show once when I was 23. I thought to myself "WOW! I can't believe they are willing to do this, maybe they are turning the corner." Well, we walked around the show for a while and the entire time was spent with her asking him "What's that for?" and him answering "To kill people." needless to say I never tried to get them to go again and stopped trying to get them to change their minds. Some people you just can't get through to.

Well isn't it ?

Sorry, just had to throw that in there .....

This is a cut and paste from another thread I started but it still applies.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gangbanger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat-it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed. People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level. The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weightlifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation…and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.
sfguard, This is without a doubt one of the most well thought out and succinct responses I've read on this subject.
It isn't condescending, angry, or submissive. Thanks for your well thought out discourse. I hope with your permission
to be able to print this out and let some of my anti gun acquaintances read it.

I am the only one in my office without a CCW permit. I'll be fixing that soon....

If asked why I would want a CCW permit, I would say it is not because I lust to walk around with a weapon, but because I want the training, and want to earn the mutual respect of my sheriff's office. Being recognized as law-abiding, responsible and trustworthy to the point of having a permit feels like full-fledged citizenship to me.

I am sure it means many different things to many different people, but, first and foremost is the fact that one can depend on being able to defend ones self and family if/when the need arises !

All the other is just perks of the program ....

Ask yourself, why you bought it, and answer them with that answer. You won't change their minds, so don't try. Just give an honest answer. Most of all don't get into an argument over it. If you want listen to their side, they will probably respect you for it. Respect their opinion, even if you don't agree.

I totally agree. Just heard this a day or so ago: "A gun is like a parachute. If you need it and don't have it, you won't ever need it again"!

What I long for is a world where a CCW permit it not needed. Wishful thinking. With that in mind I'd rather have the ability to protect myself and my loved ones from the multitudes of lunatics roaming my streets every day and night. They're roaming yours also. But, then you already knew that.

The person asking the question ALWAYS controls the conversation, therefore turn it around to, "why do you dye your hair"? Or something else that fits that person.

You will NEVER convince them until they have a scenario that opens their eyes.

This is why the antis must not be reasoned with, they must be defeated. That's their tactic too.

I grew up around guns and motorcycles all my life (62yrs). My father was wise enough to teach his sons about gun safety from an early age. I've been in the military, worked as a reserve officer for Daytona Bch P.D. and worked for the Dept. of Corrections. Crime now seems to be more rampant than it was back then. I elect to protect myself and the ones I love and am greatful to live in a country that allows me this opportunity. When it comes to gun laws, reading is knowledge, hitting your target comes from practice.

Well if god forbid I had to use my firearm to stop someone from snatching a child off the street It would probably take a while for me to get a word in about why I had a gun on my person with all the thanks the parents would be saying

For the sport and added measure of security. If someone asks me why I open carry, I politely tell them it is personal choice and I choose to open carry instead of carrying discrete. If they say "but don't you loose your tactical advantage?" I tell them I am not in a war zone so no, I don't loose tactical advantage. If they push the point of why discrete is better I walk away because it shows they have no respect for me as a fellow firearms owner by questioning my reasons.

amen brother! Amen!

Ask them to imagine the terror and carnage that went on at Sandy Hook and Columbine......then ask them to imagine what if there was a good guy there with a gun.

It's my God Given Right to protect myself and my family. Given that I don't want to use an inferior "tool" to do the job like a baseball bat or kitchen knife, I want the best that I can get because my family's life and my life deserves it. Until they come out with Phasers that I can put on Heavy Stun a quality handgun with good Hollow Point ammo is still one of the better choices that I can have.

More than ever before, it is important to be a diplomat when it comes to dealing with people that have opposing or hostile views towards guns and the rights we have. If you say the wrong things these people will become more entrenched in their already misguided ideas. I see way too many people say stupid things that only hurt the cause. Even worse, those who do stupid things, like the guy who walked into Kroger with an AR to display his right to bear arms... I do agree that getting someone to the range can be a good thing, as long as you're able to convey the knowledge that it takes to handle a gun safely.

People that aren't "into" guns tend to want to give firearms way to much "power". A firearm is simply a "dumb" tool that doesn't think, feel or do anything on it's own. It's like a chainsaw, hammer or car and it'll only do what the person who is in control of it wills it to do. It can be used for good to defend yourself with or to hunt and target shoot with or it can be used for bad. People that want to pass laws against a firearm totally miss the point, passing a law banning a firearm or making it illegal to own a magazine that holds more then 7 or 10 or "X" rounds will do nothing to stop crime because it's the evil intent of man that causes crime, not a "tool".
