Good forum Rob. My answear is never enough. I have 5 calibers on hand and keep an ample supply to feed all of them. My question is at what point does the range ammo become SD ammo? I think keeping more quality (SD) ammo on hand is more important than thousands of rounds you would not carry for SD. WWB=cheap,Speer= not cheap. I like to keep more SD ammo I trust than range ammo. I buy WWB when going to the range.I stock SD ammo in my safe.I also shoot the SD ammo at the range when I can afford to, just to make sure my guns still like it.
Before the new Presidential administration and the run on ammo I had bought 5 gallon "paint" buckets from Home Depot with sealed lids. I limited most of my weapons to 9mm; 223's. I have more than ever needed. I have since bought into the .40S&W's and have about 1,000 rounds of practice and probably 500 of carry rounds. I have enjoyed the new Critical Defense from Hornady. I need to put for 9mm's up for sale so I can now buy some ammo for my AK-47
I have about 1,000 rounds of each caliber (9mm, 40S&W and 45GAP). I figured it I can shoot it down range it will take someone down too if needed. I do carry about 40 rounds each 40 and 45gap in Hornday for my carries.
Numbers change depending on the day of the week and which match is coming. Six boxes of 40 S&W LEO ammo for carry, 3 boxes of 45ACP Personal Defense for HD, 9 rounds of 0000 buck in the shotgun with 6 slugs in the sidesaddle. About 40,000 primers and 15,000 bullets in stock divided between large & small and 9,40 & 45. 2,000 rounds of 223 in stripper clips.
I have about 1200 rds of SD ammo and about 200 rds of range stuff. I got a bunch of ugly bad looking PDX1s from an on-line supply store a while back that I will be only shooting at the range after checking each round. They claimed it was only blemishes but the jackets and lead are very uneven and not uniform.
I usually have 1000 rounds of ammo on hand for each caliber I shoot. And that is for practice.
As for SHTF emergencies, I will only carry enough for four 19-round 9mm magazines and five 30-round AK 7.62 magazines. I'm not planning to be in one place too long, and moving around with a lot of ammo is not practical. I will obtain more as needed along my route.
