As a prosecutor who wears a suit every day and a gun on my hip under my jacket, I couldn't disagree with you more. First, the only reason the gun is concealed is because we are wearing a jacket. It's not like it needs to be concealed or anything. When on duty, any law enforcement other than undercover can and should be able to have a visible gun. Do you complain when a uniformed officer has an overcoat on in inclement weather and takes it off to reveal his gun? What's the difference for an officer in a suit? Secondly, and probably more importantly, it is proper etiquette when wearing a suit to remove your jacket before sitting down to eat. So your assumption that they were "showing off" or being "unprofessional" is seriously misplaced. They were showing the proper etiquette for people dressed such as they were. Their "showing off" was only in your head and I'm certain it was not their intent and likely never crossed their mind. When walking around my office, I have my jacket off all the time revealing my duty weapon. It has never once crossed my mind that it was showing off in any way. My gun is part of my uniform, as is my suit. I put it on in the morning and hopefully don't have to think about it again until the end of the work day. So I seriously doubt they were showing off.
