Either of those is a good choice with or without a chart.
If money & availability wasn't an issue I'd choose HST as my first choice, regardless of caliber, followed by Speer Gold Dots. My third choice is Winchester Ranger-T with fourth being Remington Golden Sabers.
However, I almost always can find Gold Dots in abundance so that is generally what I carry.
My motivation for changing carry ammo or better described as testing is... I have a friend that is a free
lance sports writer. He writes for the local metro paper and also for several various magazines. He has the amazing luck to have products just dropped in his lap for testing and review. I have scored all kind of stuff from him over the years that he has gotten from vendors for review. I have gotten all expense paid trips to Talladega for the race, free fishing gear, tents, backpacks, and even a mountain bike. He has done a few shooting reviews as well. About a year ago he did a 1911 review. He managed having several manufacturers send him T&E guns for his piece. We had a blast testing them. Now he is working on a ammo piece. He asked me to work with him on this. I have been searching the net looking information on a varety of ammo for SD. It seems all the box stores carry Hornady, Winchester PDX, or Gold Dot. I am going to order some other ammo online and we are going to test the various ammo available. It is turning into a fun project and we haven't gotten to the shooting part yet.
Question if I may. I purchased some of .40 cal Gold Dot 165 gr GDHP Duty Ammunition from a guy selling off his .40 ammo. It was not until I read the box that I noticed the GDHP. Searched the web for information about this particular designation, could not find anything. Are these a higher velocity round than a Gold Dot 165 gr round? I am not able to find Gold Dot 165 gr GDHP for sale, just 165 gr GD.
Paid $34.00 for 40 rounds, he said they usually go for about $25.00 for 20 rounds. Any input is appreciated. If I over paid for them I am stuck with them and hope they get the job done if and when I need to use them. I have them in my G23 for everyday carry and inn the back-up magazine I carry.
I have however seen a few videos showing ballistics gel testing with both the Gold Dot 165 gr and HST in .40 cal and find the HST to appear to have a more complete expansion. Have the 147gr HST in my wife's G19.
Been using the 165gr. HST in my Glock 27 EDC for over a year now. From all the research I have been able to do it retains over 99% of its original weight and always expands to twice its size. It is one of the very few rounds to pass every one of the FBI standards as a law enforcement round.
