Mechanically the weapon is in battery !

It does not know or care if it has a round in it or not, it has no capacity to think or apply logic to the situation, it is either in battery condition or not.

This is my understanding of the pistol being in battery as well.

I think it is a term used by Geeks Who want to be noticed and to stimulate conversation. I was in the Army for 20. + years and was in both Artillery and Tank units and I never heard this. In tank the loader would say UP And when using Rifles and hand guns, "Locked and Loaded".
