Hello everyone.

I recently bought some Federal Champion Ammo. It's 40 S&W 180gr FMJ FN. I didn't realize until I bought it and got home that on the box it says "Do not use in firearms with ported barrels or ported recoil compensators". I have a G23C.

My confusion is that I bought the same ammo from wal-mart that does not have this warning. As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no difference between the ammo. The two boxes are exactly the same except for the warning.

Has anyone else ran into this problem before? Should I just sell the ammo with the warning label since I can't return them or should I try shooting them anyway?

Is the warning a sticker - added after they designed the box or actually printed on there?

never seen champion ammo with that warning either. call federal and ask.

I think the Federal Champion Ammo uses plated jacket bullets... Maybe they are afraid that the plating will come off in the slots...

Or maybe they are afraid that the low powered ammo just isn't powerful enough to fire in a compensated gun...

I think I will call Federal tomorrow and find out what the difference is. I have used the federal ammo I bought from wal-mart at the range without any problems. I would hate to have to take a loss on the other boxes I bought.

If they recommend not using them in your 23c, instead of them going to waste you could pick up a G27 to fire em off with

Unfortunately I was busy all day today and did not get a chance to call. I just sent them a question, however, from the "Ask Federal" section of their website. As soon as I get a response from them I will let you know what they said.

I got an email back from Federal today. This is their response:

Greetings,

The Champion loads have a thin copper wash on the bullet that may
possibly come apart in your firearm exiting through the ports and is the
reason for such warning on the packaging. Both boxes you posses contain
this same bullet design.

So apparently they only put the warning on some of the boxes? Wierd. I used the ammo I bought from walmart without any issues so I'm going to use the other ammo as well. After that I will probably switch to the WWB.

Hello, I just got a box of Independence 40 cal that says the same thing. I just got my 23c and I don't want to damage it or to put myself at risk. I got two boxes of this stuff. With ammo in such short supply now, what if that's all you can find? ? I've had my gun for about a month now, and I've shot about 250 rounds through it. I'm not sure if the ammo I've used had that warning or not.

Sounds like the manufacturer is primarily warning due to potential injuries to you if the bullet comes apart and shoots out the port, not so much damage to the gun.

I've not seen that warning before. If you were to shoot it, make sure you have good eye protection.

I have a 21C and recently acquired a non-ported barrel to use sometimes. Glockmeister fixed me up with that. If you decide to add a non-ported barrel to your collection, you could save the ammo for later.

Confused About Federal Champion Ammo

I just picked up 450 rounds of 9mm Federal Champion from Craig's List this morning along with
some other stuff. There is no warning on any of these boxes.

Got all this for $200.00 and a 30 minute round trip!

I'm just getting into semi-autos and have some dumb questions. Is there an area in here that describes what certain terms means? like ported vs no ported barrels and the like?

Ported barrels have manufactured holes in the sides of the barrels that let the gases escape before the bullet reaches the end of the barrel. The "usual" is the non-ported barrel where the only opening is the muzzle of the barrel. A perceived value of the ported barrel is that the escaping gases can counteract the recoil effect and keep your aim steadier, I think. A negative is that the ported barrel shoots firelight and soot out the top of the barrel right in front of your eyes.

I suggest you use the terms in the search area of the forum to see conversations and to use Google to get explanations via Wikipedia, etc.

We don't really have a glossary, but it's a good idea... But don't ever worry about asking questions... Glock.pro would be a very quiet place if no one asked any questions...

By the way, haysmclean was spot on in his explanation of ported barrels... Most of the ports/holes I've seen have been in the top of the barrel... That way the gas jets up and counteracts the natural tendency of the pistol to flip up when firing...
