Ammo liability

I recently purchased some ammo online that was marked on the boxes "Law Enforcement only, not for retail sale"....

How significant (I know, asks for opinion...too much Perry Mason as a youth) would use of ammo marked that way for self defense, if one is not LEO?

It means nothing. Carry it. Shoot it. It's a marketing "gimmick". Several major ammo mfgs label some carry ammo that way. Some sell the same thing in a different box without the LEO ONLY designation. Mysteriously, some of the LEO ONLY ammo is almost always released into the wild ... usually at a higher price.
oh dear lord! the ATF is comin for ya!

kidding :)

the ammunition manufacturers simply mark boxes "LE only" because they don't actively market it to civilians. however there's always contract overruns, or police depts figure out they bought too much, and it always ends up on the civilian market. it's perfectly legal to own.

in fact, cabelas always has a ton of it in stock. i have ranger LE in my +P+ 9mm, Ranger talon in my 45cal 1911's, and federal HST LE ammo in my 40cal. the LE ammo is the cheapest and best jhp's available (HST). a 50 round box of it is cheaper than two 20 round boxes of gold dot.

i got 40cal winchester ranger LE ammo at cabela's last week: 50 rounds for $19.99!

you're fine. ;)

A good shoot is a good shoot.
I would think the seller would share the liability and as everyone has stated, nothing to "worry" about... and I agree. I'm not sure VolGrad is spot on with it being a marketing tool, then the seller would be assuming risk for the manufacturer, which I wouldn't do in my business, but it's not beyond reason...

Don Glock's point makes sense, but in today's litigious society I find the inconsistencies in the handgun world "interesting".... Gun mods potentially "raise a red flag" but, shooting "possibly restricted" ammo is ok....

I'm not worried about any of it, I've just started with considering the self-protection side of shooting and being curious about things and it's now becoming more "curiouser and curiouser"....

Thanks for your responses!
The opposite side could also be argued ....

"Mr. Prosecutor ... I must have been using the "best choice" in carry ammo as it's the same thing the cops carry."

Some people buy into this argument and only choose to carry the exact gun and ammo combo their local PD carries.
Good point! God, i hope it never comes to that, but an ounce of preparation...
Now that that's out of the way, I found some Winchester Ranger 127 grain +p+ LEO only for $27.00 per 50 that I'm buying....
Point being no matter what the box states you bought ammo and they filled your order, as for carry I doubt if you carry the box the ammo came in. A legal sale is a legal sale. If a problem comes up in the future(it won't IMO)you have your receipt and direct ?'s to the seller

that's a great deal! i'd jump on that one.

almost everyone i know, like me, keeps LE ammo in their pistols for personal defense. it's simply the most effective, and cheapest option there is. :)
