Glock 22 gen5 slide issue

I just cleaned my gen 5 for the first time. Field strip only, cleaning and reassemble. When I put the slide back on the frame the slide went on as expected. As I tried to lock the slide back the slide would only go back 80% of the travel distance. It was short on the lock position by about 1/2 inch. I’ve owned a Glock 22 gen2 for years and never had this issue. Need help!

Is the guide rod sticking out the front of the gun slightly?

What you described can be a number of things but most common that I’ve seen is when the recoil spring assembly doesn’t seat correctly in the gun. It compresses the spring too early and the rod can be seen sticking out just a litttle.

The end of the recoil spring does stick out a tad, but just barely. I’ve probably tried repositioning the RSA 20 times and it still does the same thing. The slide goes on the gun and seats properly, but when I pull the slide back to the lock position it’s shy of engaging the lock by about one inch. This is all happening after the first cleaning and field stripping.

Can you take the slide off? And is it the rod or spring sticking out?
Please post a picture if possible.

Based on the assembled picture - that looks normal. When the spring gets jammed in the frame the rod is pushed out further.

I'll be honest, I'm a little stumped right now and that's not normal. Just confirming my understanding:

1. Brand new gun - have you fired any rounds through it?
2. Did the slide function normally before field stripping?
3. Field strip only - removed slide, RSA and barrel to clean. Then reassembled.
4. No issues with reassembly or disassembling/reassembling now
5. Everything looks normal when reassembled - but slide will not move far enough to the rear for the slide stop lever to be engaged

A couple of things you can check but they are long shots with a new gun:
1. Take the slide off and remove the barrel. Stand the slide (on a flat surface) on its nose. The slide and guide rod ring should be flat against the surface - you are checking to ensure the guide rod ring hasn't been bent from a drop. Based on the pic you posted, this looks normal but won't hurt to check.
2. Take the barrel and slide down through the opening in the slide - it should be able to travel all the way without binding. The fit with a Gen5 is a little bit tighter but as long as the barrel is straight, it should fit all the way. This is checking for a bulge in the barrel that could bind the slide. Again, a very long shot on a new gun.

i purchased the gun new in Sept of last year. I don’t shoot it much but it has had about 150 rounds through it. It functioned flawlessly with both old and new ammo. I did the checks you requested and nothing. The barrel went through all the way. I’ve owned the same gun in a gen 2 and cleaned it more than 30 times with no issues. I have a new spring coming to see if that is the problem. Some Glock armorers on here said that it has to be the spring. If the barrel is compromised I can’t seem to find on OEM or third party. I’m at a complete loss. I want to thank you for your help.

While you wait for the new spring, you could check under the locking block to see if maybe a piece of debris got in there and is preventing the barrel from moving out of the way of the slide.

Ultimately, though, there aren’t many parts involved when the slide racks. And there’s very little to go wrong when field striping to clean except a mistake reassembling and you gun doesn’t show any indication of that. That spring feels like the only option. Please let us know what happens when you test the replacement.

If the replacement spring doesn’t fix it, call Glock. The Gen5 is a great gun and Glock is a great company. This will get taken care of for you.

I’ll post a pic of how far back the slide goes and you can see my issue. i checked the locking block and found it is clean. I understand what you are saying about the Glock and for that reason I can’t understand why it’s doing this. I will call Glock after I’ve checked the new RSA.
